Blog Description

A new rosary devotion to Mary's pondering heart,
derived from the Church's Liturgy of the Hours.
The Florilegium is a scriptural rosary like the Angelus,
with a verse of scripture for each Hail Mary;
and with a Mystery of the Lord for each day of the week;
and a florilegium of verses for each liturgical season:
the Florilegium Joyful in Ordinary Time;
the Florilegium Sorrowful for Lent and Advent;
and the Florilegium Glorious for Easter, Christmas, & Feastdays.

St. Laurence Justinian Text

As Mary pondered all she had learned from what she read, what she heard, what she saw,
how greatly did she increase in faith, advance in merit, become enlightened with wisdom, and consumed with burning love!
Drawing life and inspiration from the heavenly mysteries that were being unlocked for her, she was filled with joy.
Imitate her, O faithful soul. Enter into the temple of your heart, that you may be purified in spirit.

SCRIPTURAL READGINS

A FIRST SCRIPTURAL READING
FROM THE BOOK OF JUDITH (CH. 13)

Judith was alone in the chamber. Holofernes lay on his bed, fast asleep, being exceedingly drunk. And Judith told her maid to stand outside before the chamber and to watch. Judith stood before the bed praying with tears, and with the motion of her lips in silence, saying: Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, and in this hour look on the works of my hands, that as you have promised, you may raise up Jerusalem your city: and that I may bring to pass what I have purposed, having a belief that it might be done by you.

And when she had said this, she went to the pillar that was at his bed's head, and loosed his sword that hung tied upon it. And when she had drawn it out, she took him by the hair of his head, and said: Strengthen me, O Lord God, at this hour. And she struck twice upon his neck, and cut off his head, and took off his canopy from the pillars, and rolled away his headless body.

And after a while she went out, and delivered the head of Holofernes to her maid, and bade her put it into her wallet. And the two went out according to their custom, as it were to prayer, and they passed the camp, and having compassed the valley, they came to the gate of the city. And Judith from afar off cried to the watchmen upon the walls: Open the gates for God is with us, who has shown his power in Israel.

And it came to pass that, when the men had heard her voice, they called the ancients of the city. And all ran to meet her from the least to the greatest: for they had had no hopes that she would come. And lighting up lights, they all gathered round about her; and she went up to a higher place, and commanded silence to be made. And when all had held their peace, Judith said: Praise you the Lord our God, who has not forsaken those that hope in him. And by me his handmaid he has fulfilled his mercy that he promised to the house of Israel: and he has killed the enemy of his people by my hand this night.

Then she brought forth the head of Holofernes out of the wallet, and showed it them, saying: Behold the head of Holofernes the general of the army of the Assyrians, and behold his canopy, wherein he lay in his drunkenness, where the Lord our God slew him by the hand of a woman. But as the same Lord lives, his angel has been my keeper both going hence, and abiding there, and returning from thence to here: and the Lord has not suffered me his handmaid to be defiled, but has brought me back to you wiyout pollution of sin, rejoicing for his victory, for my escape, and for your deliverance. Give all of you glory to him, because he is good, because his mercy endures forever!

And they all adored the Lord, and said to her: The Lord has blessed you by his power, because by you he has brought our enemies to nought. And Ozias the prince of the people of Israel, said to her: Blessed are you, O daughter, by the Lord the most high God, above all women upon earth. Blessed be the Lord who made heaven and earth, who has directed you to the cutting off the head of the prince of our enemies. Because he has so magnified your name this day, that your praise shall not depart out of the mouth of men, who shall be mindful of the power of the Lord forever, because on account of the distress and tribulation of your people you did not spare your life, but have prevented our ruin in the presence of our God. And all the people said: So be it, so be it.

And then Achior, leader of all the Ammonites, being called for came, and Judith said to him: The God of Israel, to whom you gave testimony before them that he revenges himself of his enemies, has cut off the head of all the unbelievers this night by my hand. And that you may find that it is so, behold the head of Holofernes, who in the contempt of his pride despised the God of Israel and threatened them with death, saying:“When the people of Israel shall be taken, I will command your sides to be pierced with a sword.”

Then Achior, seeing the head of Holofernes, and being seized with a great fear, fell on his face upon the earth, and his soul swooned away. But after he had recovered his spirits, he fell down at her feet, and he reverenced her, and he said: Blessed are you by your God in every tabernacle of Jacob, for in every nation which shall hear your name, the God of Israel shall be magnified on account of you.

Responsory:

A SECOND SCRIPTURAL READINGFROM
THE BOOK OF REVELATION 11:19

The temple of God was opened in heaven: and the ark of his testament was seen in his temple, and there were lightnings, and voices, and an earthquake, and great hail.

And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars:

And being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered.

And there was seen another sign in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns: and on his head seven diadems.

And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son.

And she brought forth a male child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod: and her son was taken up to God, and to his throne....

And there was a great battle in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought, and his angels. And they prevailed not, neither was their place found anymore in heaven.

And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who seduces the whole world. And he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying: Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: because the accuser of our brethren is cast forth, who accused them before our God day and night.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of the testimony, and they loved not their lives unto death.

Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you that dwell therein.

Woe to the earth, and to the sea, because the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time.

Responsory:

Vs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
The Lord God said to the serpent:
I will put enmities between you and the woman,
between your seed and her seed: *
And her seed shall crush your head.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  You shall lie in wait for her heel. *
Rs.  And her seed shall crush your head.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  The Lord God said to the serpent:
I will put enmities between you and the woman,
between your seed and her seed: *
Rs.  And her seed shall crush your head.

Rs. That we be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

(The concluding prayer is recited by a leader: )

We call upon thy Holy Name,
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
for our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against principalities and powers,
against directors of this world of darkness,
against spirits of wickedness in high places.

Therefore do we call upon thy Holy Name
and humbly beseech thy mercy,
to help us through the intercession
of the blessed virgin Mother
and the glorious Archangel Michael,
against the devil and all other unclean spirits
that prowl about the world like a roaring lion
seeking whom they may devour.

But do thou, O God, deliver us from evil,
through Christ our Lord:

Rs. Amen

who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls
Amen
