Blog Description

A new rosary devotion to Mary's pondering heart,
derived from the Church's Liturgy of the Hours.
The Florilegium is a scriptural rosary like the Angelus,
with a verse of scripture for each Hail Mary.
There is a Mystery of the Lord for each day of the week,
and a Florilegium of verses for each liturgical season:
the Florilegium Joyful in Ordinary Time;
the Florilegium Sorrowful for Lent and Advent;
and the Florilegium Glorious for Easter, Christmas, & Feastdays.

St. Laurence Justinian Text

As Mary pondered all she had learned from what she read, what she heard, what she saw,
how greatly did she increase in faith, advance in merit, become enlightened with wisdom, and consumed with burning love!
Drawing life and inspiration from the heavenly mysteries that were being unlocked for her, she was filled with joy.
Imitate her, O faithful soul. Enter into the temple of your heart, that you may be purified in spirit.

READINGS

FROM THE GOSPEL OF ST. MATTHEW (26:36-56):

Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani, and he said to his disciples: Sit here, while I go over there and pray. And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he grew sorrowful and to became saddened. Then he says to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay here and keep watch with me.

And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Yet be it not as I will, but as you will. Then he goes to his disciples and finds them asleep, and he says to Peter: What? Could you not keep watch one hour with me? Keep watch, all of you, and pray that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.

Again a second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, your will be done. Then he goes again and finds them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them, he went again and prayed a third time, saying the same words. Then he comes to his disciples and says to them: Do you sleep and take your rest now? Behold the hour is at hand when the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go: behold he is at hand that will betray me.

As he yet spoke, behold Judas came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people. And he his betrayer gave them a sign, saying: Whichever one I shall kiss, that is he: hold him fast. And coming straight to Jesus, he said Hail, Rabbi, and he kissed him. And Jesus said to him: Friend, do what you have come for. Then they came up and seized Jesus, and arrested him.

And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword, and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear. Then Jesus says to him: Put you your sword back into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Do you not think that I can call upon my Father, and he will give me this very moment more than twelve legions of angels? But then how shall the scriptures be fulfilled that say it must be done thus?

That very hour Jesus said to the crowd: You are come out as it were to a robber with swords and clubs to apprehend me, yet I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on me. All this has been done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples all fled, leaving him.

Responsory:

Vs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Put back your sword into its sheath, said Jesus to Peter:
For shall I not drink the chalice that my Father has given me?

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  My Father, if this chalice may not pass away unless I drink it,
then let your will be done.
Rs.  For shall I not drink the chalice that my Father has given me?

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  Put back your sword into its sheath, said Jesus to Peter:
Rs.  For shall I not drink the chalice that my Father has given me?

FROM A HOMILY BY ST. GREGORY NAZIANZEN

Although we share in the Pasch only in a symbolic way, the symbolism already has more clarity than it did in ancient times because under the Mosaic law the Pasch was, if I may say so, but a symbol of a symbol. However, when the Word drinks the new wine with us in the kingdom of his Father, even we shall be keeping the passover in a yet more perfect way, and with deeper understanding. He will then reveal to us and make clear what he has so far only partially disclosed. For the wine known to us now is ever new.

It is for us to learn what the taking of this drink is, and for him to teach and impart it to his disciples. For both his teaching and he who nourishes us is our food. So let us take our part in the Passover prescribed by the law, not in a literal way, but according to the teaching of the Gospel.

We must sacrifice ourselves to God, each day and in everything we do, accepting all that happens to us for the sake of the Word, imitating his passion by our sufferings, and honoring his blood by shedding our own. We must be ready to be crucified.

If you are a Simon of Cyrene, take up your cross and follow Christ.

If you are crucified beside him like one of the thieves, now, like the good thief, acknowledge your God. For your sake, and because of your sin, Christ himself was regarded as a sinner; for his sake, therefore, you must cease to sin. Worship him who was hung on the cross because of you, even if you are hanging there yourself. Derive some benefit from the very shame; purchase salvation with your death. Enter paradise with Jesus, and discover how far you have fallen. Contemplate the glories there, and leave the other scoffing thief to die outside in his blasphemy.

If you are a Joseph of Arimathea, go to the one who ordered his crucifixion, and ask for Christ’s body. Make your own this expiation for the sins of the whole world.

If you are a Nicodemus, then like him who worshipped God by night, bring spices and prepare Christ’s body for burial.

If you are one of the Mary's, or Salome, or Joanna, weep in the early morning. Be, then, the first to see the stone rolled back, and even the angels, and perhaps Jesus himself.

 Responsory:

Vs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Jesus said to them: Can you drink of the chalice that I drink of,
or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
You shall indeed drink of the chalice that I drink of.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us,
so also through Christ does our comfort abound.
Rs.  You shall indeed drink of the chalice I drink of.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  Jesus said to them: Can you drink of the chalice that I drink of,
or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
Rs.  You shall indeed drink of the chalice I drink of.

ANTIPHON TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Memorare, o piissima

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary,
that no one who has run to your protection,
or implored your help,
or sought your intercession,
is known ever to have been forsaken.

Enlivened by trust in this, to you I run,
O Virgin of virgins,
to you have I come, O my Mother,
before you I stand a sinner grieving.

O Mother of the Word of God,
Disdain not the words of my prayer,
but kindly give ear and graciously hear,
O most loving Virgin and Mother.

Vs. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God:
Rs. That we be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

The concluding prayer is recited by a leader:

Lord holy Father,
as you willed that when your only begotten Son was to be
exalted on the cross, his Mother stand near,
her heart pierced with grief for his pierced with a lance:
grant us that by pondering in our hearts
those two wounded for our salvation,
we may hope firmly in the eternal salvation of his resurrection.

Rs. Through the same Christ our Lord,
 Amen.
