Thou fount of life, thou light of men,
From sweetnesses that earth imparts
We turn unfilled to thee again.
Nor can the mind a name contrive,
A sweeter sound than thy sweet name,
Sweet Jesus, Savior of mankind.
Thou savest those that on thee call;
To them that seek thee, ever good,
To them that find thee, all in all.
Here where our changeful lot is cast,
Glad when thy grace at work we see,
And long to feast upon thee still;
From thee we drink, thy heart pierced through,
And thirst our souls from thee to fill.
Abide with us this hour, O Lord,

READINGS
I myself am a mortal man, like all others, and the offspring of him that was first made of the earth. And I was fashioned to be flesh in the womb of my mother: in the space of ten months I was compacted in blood, of the seed of man and the pleasure that goes with sleep. And once born, I drew in the common air and fell upon the earth that my nature is like to; and the first sound which I uttered was crying, as all other men do. I was nursed in swaddling clothes, and with great cares. There is no king that has had any other beginning of birth, for all men have one entrance into life, and the like going out.
Therefore I prayed, and understanding was given me. And I called upon God, and the Spirt of wisdom came upon me. And I preferred her to kingdoms and thrones. And I esteemed riches nothing in comparison to her, nor did I compare any precious stone to her, for all gold in comparison to her is as a little sand, and before her silver shall be counted as clay. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for her light cannot be put out.
Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands. And I rejoiced in these, for this Wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all. For she is an infinite treasure to men: they that use her become the friends of God, being commended for gifts of contemplation.
And God has granted me to speak as I wished, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given me: because he is the Guide of wisdom and the Director of the wise, for in his hand are we, as well as our words, and all wisdom, and knowledge, and skill.
Responsory:
and to the Holy Spirit:
The water I shall give him, says the Lord, will become a fountain of living water, welling up into eternal life. This is a new kind of water, a living, leaping water, welling up for those who are worthy. Like a dry tree which puts forth shoots when watered, the soul bears the fruit of holiness when repentance has made it worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit. Although the Spirit never changes, the effects of his action, by the will of God and in the name of Christ, are both many and marvelous. His action is different in different people, but the Spirit himself is always the same. In each person, Scripture says, the Spirit manifests his presence in a particular way for the common good.
The Spirit comes gently and makes himself known by his
fragrance. He is not felt as a burden, for he is light, very light. Rays of
light and knowledge stream before him as he approaches. The Spirit comes with
the tenderness of a true friend and protector: to save, to heal, to teach, to
counsel, to strengthen, to console. The Spirit comes to enlighten the mind
first of the one who receives him, and then, through him, the minds of others
as well.
As light strikes the eyes of a man who comes out of darkness
into the sunshine, and enables him to see clearly things he could not discern
before, so light floods the soul of the man counted worthy of receiving the
Holy Spirit, and enables him to see things beyond the range of human vision,
things hitherto undreamed of.
and to the Holy Spirit:
