Blog Description

A new rosary devotion to Mary's pondering heart,
derived from the Church's Liturgy of the Hours.
The Florilegium is a scriptural rosary like the Angelus,
with a verse of scripture for each Hail Mary;
and with a Mystery of the Lord for each day of the week;
and a florilegium of verses for each liturgical season:
the Florilegium Joyful in Ordinary Time;
the Florilegium Sorrowful for Lent and Advent;
and the Florilegium Glorious for Easter, Christmas, & Feastdays.

St. Laurence Justinian Text

As Mary pondered all she had learned from what she read, what she heard, what she saw,
how greatly did she increase in faith, advance in merit, become enlightened with wisdom, and consumed with burning love!
Drawing life and inspiration from the heavenly mysteries that were being unlocked for her, she was filled with joy.
Imitate her, O faithful soul. Enter into the temple of your heart, that you may be purified in spirit.

HYMN

Jesu, thou joy of loving hearts,
Thou fount of life, thou light of men,
From sweetnesses that earth imparts
We turn unfilled to thee again.

No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
Nor can the mind a name contrive,
A sweeter sound than thy sweet name,
Sweet Jesus, Savior of mankind.

Thy love unchanged has ever stood,
Thou savest those that on thee call;
To them that seek thee, ever good,
To them that find thee, all in all.

Our restless spirits yearn for thee,
Here where our changeful lot is cast,
Glad when thy grace at work we see,
Blest when unseen faith holds thee fast.

We taste thee, living bread and true,
And long to feast upon thee still;
From thee we drink, thy heart pierced through,
And thirst our souls from thee to fill.

Abide with us this hour, O Lord,

Fulfil us with thy grace, we pray;
Feed with thy body here adored
Our souls that with thee watch and pray.

(A leader says the opening prayer:)

O God,
graciously hear us who believe and confess
that present in this blessed sacrament
is the very body conceived by the Holy Spirit
in the womb of the Virgin Mary;
the very body pierced with a sword on the cross
to flow for us its precious blood and saving water.
May we always receive worthily from this piercéd heart
the rivers of living water that are thy Holy Spirit:

Whom we receive
through the same Christ our Lord.

Rs. Amen

READINGS

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF WISDOM (7:1-16):

I myself am a mortal man, like all others, and the offspring of him that was first made of the earth. And I was fashioned to be flesh in the womb of my mother: in the space of ten months I was compacted in blood, of the seed of man and the pleasure that goes with sleep. And once born, I drew in the common air and fell upon the earth that my nature is like to; and the first sound which I uttered was crying, as all other men do. I was nursed in swaddling clothes, and with great cares. There is no king that has had any other beginning of birth, for all men have one entrance into life, and the like going out.

Therefore I prayed, and understanding was given me. And I called upon God, and the Spirt of wisdom came upon me. And I preferred her to kingdoms and thrones. And I esteemed riches nothing in comparison to her, nor did I compare any precious stone to her, for all gold in comparison to her is as a little sand, and before her silver shall be counted as clay. I loved her above health and beauty, and chose to have her instead of light: for her light cannot be put out.

Now all good things came to me together with her, and innumerable riches through her hands. And I rejoiced in these, for this Wisdom went before me, and I knew not that she was the mother of them all. For she is an infinite treasure to men: they that use her become the friends of God, being commended for gifts of contemplation.

And God has granted me to speak as I wished, and to conceive thoughts worthy of those things that are given me: because he is the Guide of wisdom and the Director of the wise, for in his hand are we, as well as our words, and all wisdom, and knowledge, and skill.

Responsory:

Vs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
We know not what to pray for as we ought,
but the Holy Spirit helps our weakness.
For the Paraclete will teach us all things.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  The Spirit himself asks for us with ineffable groanings,
and the Searcher of hearts knows what the Spirit desires
Rs.  For the Paraclete will teach us all things.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  We know not what to pray for as we ought,
but the Holy Spirit helps our weakness.

For the Paraclete will teach us all things.

FROM THE INSTRUCTIONS TO CATECHUMENS
OF ST. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA

The water I shall give him, says the Lord, will become a fountain of living water, welling up into eternal life. This is a new kind of water, a living, leaping water, welling up for those who are worthy. Like a dry tree which puts forth shoots when watered, the soul bears the fruit of holiness when repentance has made it worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit. Although the Spirit never changes, the effects of his action, by the will of God and in the name of Christ, are both many and marvelous. His action is different in different people, but the Spirit himself is always the same. In each person, Scripture says, the Spirit manifests his presence in a particular way for the common good.

The Spirit comes gently and makes himself known by his fragrance. He is not felt as a burden, for he is light, very light. Rays of light and knowledge stream before him as he approaches. The Spirit comes with the tenderness of a true friend and protector: to save, to heal, to teach, to counsel, to strengthen, to console. The Spirit comes to enlighten the mind first of the one who receives him, and then, through him, the minds of others as well.

As light strikes the eyes of a man who comes out of darkness into the sunshine, and enables him to see clearly things he could not discern before, so light floods the soul of the man counted worthy of receiving the Holy Spirit, and enables him to see things beyond the range of human vision, things hitherto undreamed of.

 Responsory:

Vs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
neither has it entered into the heart of man,
what things God has prepared for them that love him.
For God reveals them to us by his Spirit.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  We have received the Spirit of God,
that we may understand the things given us from God.
Rs.  For God reveals them to us by his Spirit.

Rs.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
Vs.  Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
neither has it entered into the heart of man,
what things God has prepared for them that love him.

ANTIPHON TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Ave Maris Stella

Hail, guiding Star of seafarers,
portal to eternal light!
Ever-virgin mother of God,
shine on us thy light from light.

By the grace of Gabriel's Ave,
overturning Eva's name,
God's peace confer upon us all
in our journey 'mid the waves.

Our captive fetters unloosing,
his light upon our darkness pour.
All our ills below expelling,
blessings from above implore.

To him who took you for his own,
in taking from you his own flesh,
offer him our prayers, we pray thee,
thou our Mother by his address.

Most gentle one, make us gentle.
Most chaste one, make us most chaste.
Peerless virgin, be our shelter
against the flesh's sin and taint.

Our way here keep immaculate,
keep our footsteps pure and sure,
till we enter thy Son's sweet joy
one with thee forevermore.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
Rs. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

(The concluding prayer is recited by a leader:)

Lord Holy Father,
as your Holy Spirit did prepare a worthy dwelling for your Word
in the immaculate heart of his virgin mother,
grant us likewise, we beseech thee, by her intercession
to come unto thee with hearts purified and filled
by thy Holy Spirit.

Through the same Christ our Lord:

Rs. Amen.
